Showing initial aromas of classic cabernet characteristics of cassis, Herbs de Provence, blueberries and black pepper, it doesn’t stop here. This vintage continues building its expression through anise, sweet snapdragon notes, cardamom, tapenade, orange zest, and malty cocoa.  On the palate, it explodes with a wide spectrum of flavors including blueberries and toast, fresh black currants, blackberries, black olive, and hints of vanilla bean and wood spice. There is also a savory, juicy, meaty side to the wine showing power and pedigree with perfectly ripened fruit, fine oak integration, and a lengthy spice-loaded finish.

From a much warmer vintage and showing a more bass-driven profile, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Ciel nevertheless remains remarkably civilized and fresh on both the nose and palate. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that’s from the Grand Ciel Vineyard, it offers up decadently styled, if not slightly gamey, aromas and flavors of dark fruits, espresso, aged beef, crushed flowers and dusty minerality as well as full-bodied power and richness on the palate that never comes across as heavy. Closing down rather quickly with air and showing more and more tannic grip, this serious effort needs to be forgotten in the cellar for 3-5 years and will have 15-20 years or so of ultimate longevity. Drink 2018-2033.

Grand Ciel Cabernet is a single vineyard, single varietal and single clone Cabernet from our estate vineyard on Red Mountain. Every detail of our vineyard has been designed to produce the highest quality fruit from the unique climate and soil of this prestigious AVA known for ripe and structured Cabernet. Our rigorous selection process only permits a small portion of grapes to become part of Grand Ciel.

Cold soaked 24-36 hours, fermented 14-16 days on skin, aged 20 months in 100% French oak (100% new) and aged in bottle 18 months prior to release.
