2021 Le Colosse

The 2021 Le Colosse represents the best qualities of Yakima Valley Merlot, sourced from four of the finest sites in the valley: Boushey, Dubrul, Harrison Hill, and Red Willow vineyards.  Candied red fruits, opulent mouthfeel, and firm acid unite to create a pure expression of Merlot that is quite easy to enjoy in its youth.  There are whiffs of sarsaparilla, red licorice, mixed berry compote and vanilla bean leading to a lush, energetic palate, with a savory component that adds depth and complexity.  Drink with confidence on release or cellar 12+ years.

This 100 per cent merlot is blended from the winery’s top merlot sources. The wine is rich and relaxed, with dark cherries and plums, spearmint and hints of toast and vanilla. Simply yummy, but also structured and appetizing. Drink or hold. – James Suckling

Behind the Wine

2021 Le Colosse

Commonly attributed to Isaac Newton, although most likely originating centuries earlier, the expression “if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” refers to the constant discovery and accomplishment only possible due to the previous effort and exploration by others. “Le Colosse” invokes the people, vineyards, and winemaking techniques that we seek to relentlessly build upon. For over a quarter-century, we have endeavored to use this incredible foundation to craft wines of character and balance unique to DeLille, while being true to the distinct style of Washington State.

Vineyards

DuBrul Vineyard was planted in 1992, the same year DeLille was founded. Owner Hugh Shiels tends to the vines.

Winemaking

Stainless steel fermented, 12-14 days on skins. Barrel aged 20 months in French oak (70% new). Bottle aged 8 months prior to release.
