2020 Grand Ciel Cabernet

Red Mountain AVA

Undeterred by its youth, the 2020 Grand Ciel Cabernet delivers an abundance of pleasure on release.  The nose shows whiffs of blackberry, roasted baking spices, star anise and cedar plank.  The harmonious palate displays powerful, broad tannins and intense richness while remaining impeccably balanced and fresh.  The oak is layered seamlessly in the background behind spicy green peppercorn, red currants, fresh dark espresso, and molasses.  The lengthy finish is focused and has great purity of fruit with a savory edge.  I love this wine now, but its true colors will show after five more years in the bottle, and it will be able to cellar for 20+ years. – N.B

2021 D2

Columbia Valley AVA

The 2021 D2 shows the promise of the vintage, with deep concentration and outstanding quality. Initial aromas of blackberry, cassis and green peppercorn lead to a palate bursting with beautiful richness and texture. The high-quality, fine-grained tannins of this wine allow approachability in its youth, yet have the firmness and backbone to provide aging for 15+ years. Red currant, Bing Cherry and toasty oak flavors develop with time, leading to a lengthy finish with impressive weight. Cheers to 30 vintages of D2 and many more on the way. – N.B

2020 Chaleur Estate

Yakima Valley AVA

The 1982 Cabernet Sauvignon vines from Ciel du Cheval are once again the soul of this wine and responsible for its incredible richness.  Marionberry, green peppercorn, fresh truffle and pomegranate seed are muddled with baking spices and warm oak undertones.  Dubrul Vineyard Merlot (23%) provides fresh blueberry and Maraschino cherry notes while rounding out the mid-palate to create a seamless transition to a dense, pondering finish.  With plenty of time to open up, there is everything to love about this effort.  Cellaring 12+ years will help tame the tannins and bring along even more complexity. – N.B.

2021 Doyenne

Columbia Valley AVA

The marriage of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache is quite agreeable in this 2021 effort of Doyenne that offers aromas of blackberry, cassis, graphite and green peppercorn. The meaty, dark-fleshed Syrah is framed beautifully by the firm structured Cab, while the Grenache adds a floral lift and bright red fruit undertones. The palate is dense and nicely weighted, yet still has good energy that leads to a lengthy finish. Pair with your favorite grilled meats now or cellar 12+ years.  – N.B

2021 Signature Syrah

Yakima Valley AVA

The 2021 Signature Syrah sings on release, displaying a classic floral and charcuterie combination that is what Washington State Syrah is all about. Dark plum, violets and dried meats are the dominant aromas that lead way to a touch of orange pith and blueberry compote. The velvety texture lays on the palate effortlessly, with a juicy quality that shows the concentration of the vintage. This wine brings ‘all the feels’ invoking a great deal of satisfaction. Seamless balance, purity of fruit, and a luxurious mouthfeel makes this wine hard to put down. Enjoy now or cellar 10+ years. – N.B

2022 Chaleur Blanc

Columbia Valley AVA

The 2022 Chaleur Blanc is bright, energetic and, on its release date, possesses wonderful tension.  More prominent than recent vintages, classic Sauvignon Blanc notes of gooseberry lead on the nose, followed by whiffs of green apple, apricot and white flowers.  The palate has flavors of lemon brioche and peach-infused mascarpone, buttressed with flinty, mineral qualities.  The finish is round and defined by its length and enticing freshness.  Enjoy now or cellar for 10+ years to experience the complexity and evolution of this beauty.
