Undeterred by its youth, the 2020 Grand Ciel Cabernet delivers an abundance of pleasure on release. The nose shows whiffs of blackberry, roasted baking spices, star anise and cedar plank. The harmonious palate displays powerful, broad tannins and intense richness while remaining impeccably balanced and fresh. The oak is layered seamlessly in the background behind spicy green peppercorn, red currants, fresh dark espresso, and molasses. The lengthy finish is focused and has great purity of fruit with a savory edge. The 1982 Cabernet Sauvignon vines from Ciel du Cheval are once again the soul of this wine and responsible for its incredible richness. Marionberry, green peppercorn, fresh truffle and pomegranate seed are muddled with baking spices and warm oak undertones. Dubrul Vineyard Merlot (23%) provides fresh blueberry and Maraschino cherry notes while rounding out the mid-palate to create a seamless transition to a dense, pondering finish.
