Meet the 2024 DeLille Cellars Harvest Interns

Our team is currently in the midst of harvest, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate our winemaking team and interns who are working tirelessly to ensure exceptional quality for DeLille Cellars’ 2024 vintage.

With the guidance of our winemaking team, the six interns were able to learn from some of the best in the business. Harvest began slightly later than usual this vintage. When the winemaking team visited Sagemoor Vineyards in the first week of September, they confirmed the fruit had reached optimal ripeness and knew it was time to start bringing in the Sauvignon Blanc for Chaleur Blanc. The team officially began processing fruit on September 4th, and it has been flowing in steadily ever since. Our Winemaker, Nick Bernstein, and Assistant Winemaker, Mari Rossi, were joined by Cellar Leads Page Kafonek, Sophie Louaillier, and Matilda Schroeter to develop the next season of DeLille Cellars’ greatness.

DeLille Cellars’ 2024 Harvest Interns

Jason Atlas

This is my first harvest, and I couldn’t be more excited to get my hands dirty and further pursue my passion for wine. Going from being in electrical, to a cashier at a wine shop, not knowing that there were differences in grape varieties to developing a love for the intricacies of wine, to pursuing WSET3 and tackling my first harvest. The wine industry has made it clear to me that is what I want to do. Having the opportunity to be around the grapes and a great team, producing great wine people will enjoy is amazing. I was at total wine for two years before deciding a harvest was the next step and having already enjoyed the wines and knowing what I could potentially help make I was excited to see the opportunity with DeLille!

Joan Kappes

Joan left a career in pharma and cosmetics two years ago to pursue her interest in wine. She recently completed the UC Davis Winemaking Certificate Program and WSET Level 3 and had her first hands-on experience in Walla Walla last harvest as a lab/cellar intern. Joan is thrilled to be working her second harvest as an intern with DeLille Cellars and is honored to be learning from this amazing and talented team.

Nicole Rademacher

Nicole first discovered her passion for wine while studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. She continued to study wine as a hobby for another five years before leaving her previous career in Public Accounting to pursue winemaking. As a lifelong learner, Nicole graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with her Bachelor of Business Administration and Master in Professional Accounting and is currently enrolled in the Enology Certificate Program at Washington State University.

Sigrid Mellem

Sigrid, in her first harvest, is basking in the splendors of the season, from mystery bruises and tired muscles to learning all she can from the knowledgeable people around her. If she had to pick, a few of her favorite activities so far are sliding in and out of tanks, waxing bottles, admiring grape clusters of all sizes, wearing the latest fishermen fashion to clean the presses, and doing anything barrel-related. After harvest, you’ll most likely find her shredding (or falling down) the slopes with her partner, smothering her pup with love, and continuing her adventures in wine. Cheers to a smashing harvest!

Sophie Barber

This is Sophie’s second year as a harvest intern with Delille Cellars. Earlier this year, she broadened her winemaking experience at a winery in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. With a background in biology from Washington State University, Sophie enjoys applying her knowledge of science to the winemaking process. She is excited for another great harvest season here at Delille.

Yvan Rautureau

Yvan recently relocated to Washington state after a decade in California. Before that, he was a sales and marketing director for a food company in France. After moving to California, he pursued his passion for wine, earned an enology degree and worked as an enologist in Sonoma County for a few years. Now, Yvan seeks a new opportunity to further develop his winemaking skills and continue his growth in the field.
